The Frac Spread Count (FSC) is a measure of active hydraulic fracturing crews, or “frac spreads,” operating across the United States.
Developed by Primary Vision in 2014, FSC tracks the number of active pressure pumping fleets completing wells, making it one of the most accurate indicators of completion activity in the oil and gas industry.
A frac spread is a complete hydraulic fracturing fleet, including pressure pumping horsepower, blenders, hydration units, chemical additive systems, data vans, and supporting equipment required to execute a frac job on a well.
Primary Vision updates the Frac Spread Count weekly, providing timely insights into changes in U.S. shale activity.
The Frac Spread Count is widely used by:
Oil and gas operators
Oilfield service companies
Commodity traders and hedge funds
Investment banks and research teams
It provides a forward-looking view of production while enabling evaluation of publicly traded U.S. oil and gas equities, tracking operational activity and overall business health, and assessing asset quality by location, hydrocarbon mix, crude type, and oil versus gas exposure, among many other capabilities.
Key Differences:
Frac Spread Count = wells being completed
Rig Count = wells being drilled
Because of drilled but uncompleted wells (DUCs), rig count can diverge from actual production trends. FSC helps close that gap.
The Frac Spread Count is used to analyze activity in major U.S. basins including:
- Anadarko
Appalachian
Ardmore
Arkoma
Cherokee
Denver
Fort Worth
Green River
Permian
Powder River
San Joaquin
San Juan
TX-LA-MS SALT
Uinta-Piceance
