Every single active frac spread, as calculated by our Frac Spread Count, went offline in the state of Texas last week. Wait….really? Let us explain… Typically, our weather input is binary and hasn’t ever affected our algorithm to this level in the 8 years we’ve been tracking activity. When refiners shut down their systems as a result of a forthcoming hurricane, we resume operations pretty quick. For instance, paths of hurricanes can change from hour to hour and while you might be home from work one day, you could be back to work at the top of the following morning. That’s what happens sometimes, absolutely nothing. This past week was different. A violent polar vortex entered Texas crippling the electrical grid causing a state-wide water and power outage on a scale never seen before. It will take weeks to understand how bad this storm impacted Texas. Pipes can be replaced, but there is dozens of people who suffered to the very end, lost their lives and still aren’t accounted for. We need to understand our resources better for emergency purposes, replace leaders who embarrassingly failed at their respective jobs and fortify systems with world-class solutions. This type of collapse cannot happen ever again. Not in Texas or the United States of America. How about that count? We believe that 97% of activities stopped for a period 4 days before resuming on Friday of this past week. Sand mines require fuel to run. Trucks need people to drive them, safely. Systems and equipment need to go through safety checks and may require maintenance after last week’s debacle. That said, we’ll see a substantial recovery on Friday, but it’ll be weeks before we’re back to normal. Look for an update on Friday afternoon to the Primary Vision Frac Spread Count.
