KLX Energy Services: Q1 TAKE THREE

In Q1 2025, KLX Energy’s revenues and adjusted EBITDA decreased compared to the quarter earlier. Free cash flow turned negative. Despite reservations about the industry activity and economic growth, its revenues and margin can improve marginally in Q2.

Q2 Outlook: KLX Energy Services’ (KLXE) management expressed concern over the economic trends and low visibility for commodity prices and operator activity in the industry. Despite that, the company expects Q2 revenues to be “up low to mid-single digits,” while its operating margin can expand moderately.

Revenue and EBITDA Margin Shrank in Q1 : Quarter-over-quarter, KLXE's revenues in the Rocky Mountains decreased by 11% in Q1, while its operating income turned mildly negative. Northeast/Mid-Con saw an 18% revenue fall, while its operating income turned steeply negative in Q1. Lower pressure pumping activity and lower regional gas-focused activity hurt the segment's results in Q1. Its revenues from the Southwest segment, on the other hand, increased by 6% in Q1 from a quarter earlier.

Overall, KLXE's adjusted EBITDA margin deteriorated sharply (down by 480 basis points) from Q4’24 to Q1’25 due to seasonal market activity slowdown, reduction in Mid-Con completions activity, and reduced directional drilling activity.

Cash Flows Negative; Net Debt Increased : KLXE's cash flow from operations steeped more into the negative territory in the past year until Q1 2025. So, its free cash flow also stayed negative in Q1 2025. Net debt increased by 23% since the start of the year. Due to a large accumulated deficit and a rise in net loss, its shareholders' equity was negative as of March 31, 2025.
